This is really shocking and unethical. Ex-Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa is now working for Herbalife a known pyramid scam. They hired him because Mexicans make up 60% of the "distributors" aka people getting fleeced by Herbalife. These are working poor who are just trying to get ahead in life. Instead they get taken.
Legally Herbalife is not a pyramid scam because there is an actual product. A true pyramid scam would have no product. I was at a court hearing in Federal district court and listened to a bit of testimony. Legally Herbalife words their distributor agreement so it is not legally a pyramid scam. Because you sign the agreement which basically says "you agree this is not a pyramid scheme," you can't win a fraud lawsuit. They've been getting away with this scam for years.
Herbalife sells products to the distributor. The distributor then sells the products to buyers for a profit. The problem is the products are way over priced. You can't make that much money selling the products alone. Herbalife is a multi-level marketing system. The distributor gets 5% of the profits from anyone that he recruits. Most money is made recruiting others. More info about the scam, legal definitions of pyramid schemes here http://money.cnn.com/2013/01/08/investing/herbalife-ackman/index.html?iid=EL
