Opossum making smacking sound - Mary Cummins, Animal Advocates

Opossums make various types of sounds. One of them is a smacking sound. Males make this sound to call to females for mating. Sometimes females imitate the same sound in reply. Mothers will also make the sound to tell her babies to come to her. I generally only see that when I have a mom with babies in an outdoor enclosure. If I approach the enclosure while her babies are not in her  pouch or not on her back, she will make the sound and they will instantly run to her, get in the pouch or on her back.
