Dog killed by mountain lion, Mary Cummins, Animal Advocates |
"A mountain lion attack that killed their French bulldog puppy prompted a Southern California couple to obtain a permit to hunt the big cat down.
The Riverside Press-Enterprise reports Holly and Mark Adams received the permit from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife this week, after one of their very valuable French bulldog puppies was killed in their backyard in Beaumont.
The couple says their purebred pet Mickey Blue was worth $4,000. The Department can issue such a permit upon request when property is lost in an attack.
They said the cougar was tracked to a golf course, but then Beaumont police officials wouldn't let them use a firearm.
“We don’t allow any shooting or hunting within the city limits,” said Beaumont Department Commander Greg Fagan.
The attack happened early Monday morning, March 17, at the home in the 35800 block of Anderson Street, according to Holly and Mark Adams, the owners of the dog, the Press Enterprise reports."

Holly and Mark Allen Adams (age 47) live at 35880 Anderson Street, Beaumont, CA 92223 (4 bed, 3 bath, 2,332 sf, 5,227 sf lot, $190K, built 2006, bought 2011, MLS E10100571). Their back yard faces a street and is across from a park. This is not a heavily populated area. They are near Morongo Golf Club at Tukwet Canyon. I assume that is where the mountain lion is denning. It's possible the mountain lion is pregnant. We really don't need people killing protected animals. Mountain lions are protected in California.
If you live in mountain lion or coyote country, you cannot leave small animals in your yard. They will be eaten. I'm sure the sound of the little dogs attracted the mountain lion. They need to build a secure enclosure outside or not leave them there unprotected. I blame the dog owners in this situation.
Mark had this to say, "Talking to people, they've spotted it three, four years. So it's getting bigger, it's more aggressive, a kid's going to end up getting hurt or human is going to end up getting hurt. We thought we were doing the right thing by getting the permit and trying to make the community safe," said Adams."
I'm glad they are not allowed to shoot it. I hope they are not able to kill it within the ten days by March 28, 2014. In fact I'll bet money that they can't. Plus, if they kill it, another mountain lion or coyote can kill their dogs. It won't stop animals from killing their dogs. They can only shoot it, can't trap or poison it.
