The first person to contact the current ebola virus was a two year old boy who died December 2013. His sister, mother also contacted the disease and died. People who went to their funeral contacted the disease and spread it to other villages. The boy was supposedly bitten by an African straw colored bat. Others have been infected by eating bats which is very common in this area.

The African fruit bat is a migratory bat. They migrate to Africa when fruit is ripe to eat. This is generally around November or December. It is the largest mammal migration on the planet. They migrate 1,900 or 1,200 miles. So far the current ebola outbreak has been found in the following areas (see map). Previously ebola was found in Uganda, Sudan besides other countries. This area is part of the African and Egyptian fruit bat migration route. Theoretically ebola could spread outside of the African continent via migratory bats and of course humans.

People are contacting the disease by being bitten by infected bats, eating infected bats and eating fruit dropped by infected bats. Monkeys in the Philippines were found to be infected with ebola. Bats are considered a reservoir species as they carry the virus but don't succumb to it.They have no clinical signs of infection.

African and Egyptian fruit bats have made their way from Africa to the United States and Europe via the pet trade. Villagers capture fruit bats and sell them to vendors who sell them as pets in other parts of the country and world. Just last month someone moved approximately 200 African and Egyptian fruit bats to Wetherford, Texas in Parker County. Fruit bats also can carry a form of the rabies virus namely the lyssavirus which is fatal.Bat World Sanctuary allows non-vaccinated people to play with and feed the fruit bats. Here is Texas attorney Randy Turner feeding Peekaboo an Egyptian fruit bat from Africa without any gloves. Non-vaccinated people should never touch a bat with their bare hands.
