This is hilarious. I was really drinking the Koolaid back then. I'm almost as poor a judge of character as Gary. I will dig up the video. I have it on dvd. I can't believe I said he was "handsome." It's amazing how perceptions change when you finally come to really know a person.
I think Sherri Hackett was against Ed Boks, so was Debbie Knaan though I don't think Knaan
spoke about it at this meeting. They were both right about Ed Boks. He had a horrible track
record and never should have been hired. He made a mess of the department. I believe more animals died because of Ed Boks. I'm not talking the euth numbers for the shelter. I'm talking about over all. He refused a lot of animals who probably ended up dead or pregnant.
Meeting with Ed Boks and Gary Michelson by Mary Cummins
Sat Dec 24, 2005 2:59 pm
A few of us animal rescue people met the new interim GM Ed Boks and Gary
Michelson at a party at commissioner Riordan's house last Thursday night. Boks
will be meeting with all the rescue people in numerous get togethers. I'll
post about it here.
Each of us took two minutes to introduce ourselves. He also wanted us to say
what we think are the most important things that will help LA's animals.
Most of us said spay/neuter and employee accountability. Teri Austen of the
Amanda Foundation took notes so she should be sending them around soon. I also
videotaped the meeting.
Everyone offered good ideas and were very receptive to Boks except two
people. One said she wants him to prove himself. The other was just very cold.
There were about 40 people there, names listed below to the best of my
recollection. Sorry if I left anyone out.
This Gary Michelson guy is a saint. I truly believe he will help make great
changes in LA. He's of course extremely intelligent and seems very genuine.
He's a super quick study so he knows all the issues and programs. He really
cares about people and animals. On top of that he's handsome. He spoke to
everyone who wanted to speak to him. People were sharing their ideas and he was
putting them in touch with the head of his new foundation. Some great things
will be happening in LA soon.
Ed Bokes told us about himself and where he's coming from. He basically said
everything that's in the articles that I posted here. He is so different
than Stuckey. He is genuine, warm and speaks well though he had a cold that
night. He is EXTREMELY knowledgeable about the issues and all the possible new
programs we may be able to use here in LA. I can't think of a better person to
be the GM of LAAS. Everyone was actually joking around a little about whether
or not he'd want this tough job with all our problems and the activists
activity.
People who were there: Michelle from the Bunny Bunch, Daniel Guss of the
STAND Foundation, Michel Bell of CHULA and ALAN PAC, Rich Mc Clellan of the
same, Rachel Paps of Sam Simon, Dr. Jennifer Conrad of PAWS and Animal General
Hospital, Ed Muzika, Jacky DeHavlyn, Mark Dodge of Catnippers, Charlotte Laws,
Sherry Hackett of Singita, Gary Michelson, Mary Cummins of Animal Advocates
and AASPCA, Jim Bickhart from the Mayor's Office, Commissioner Kathleen
Riordan, Commissioner Debbie Knaan, Christy Metropole, Jennifer Pryor, Lois
Newman,Laura Beth Heisen of AMRT, Teri Austen of the Amanda Foundation, Kynama Wald of the Rescue Alliance, Scott Sorrentino of the Rescue Alliance, Sue
Freeman, Melya Kaplan, Sue Romaine, Volunteer Jane Garcia, Irene Ponce, David
Casselman, Bobby of New Leash on Life, Dr. Laura Cochrane.
