In remembrance this Veteran's Day my grandfather Robert Clay Cummins born January 26, 1902 in Oklahoma, died September 9, 1943 in Hawaii while working for the military in the US Engineering Department. Preceded in death by his father James Madison Cummins and mother Catherine "Katie" Hill. Survived at that time by his siblings, wife Mary Rivera Cummins and daughter Marie Juliette Cummins.
Robert "Jesse Bryant" Cummins while living in Texas enlisted in the US Army WWII Private First Class September 1, 1939. He was first stationed at Midway Island. He traveled aboard the USS Sirius from Midway Island to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii April 18, 1940 as a civilian in the Engineering Department. He traveled aboard the USS Republic from San Francisco to Hawaii arrived July 29, 1943 and died September 9, 1943 in Hawaii. He's listed in the US Roster of WWII dead as a casualty of war and is buried in the Point Loma Military Cemetery in San Diego, California. His wife Mary Cummins is buried with him.

Thanks to ancestry.com I was able to figure out his true military dates and the name he used in the army. My grandmother told me he died in Pearl Harbor and that is not true according to the documents. It turns out they got divorced before he died. Based on the documents he may have been at Pearl Harbor when it was bombed but he didn't die.
