Amanda Lollar of Bat World Sanctuary in Mineral Wells, Wetherford, Texas is holding a bat showing the signs of rabies in her bare hand. NEVER TOUCH A BAT WITH YOUR BARE HANDS!!! This is not my hand. I would never touch a possibly rabid bat with my bare hand.

Notice the bat has tremors, is out of it and is curling his feet up to his stomach. These are all signs of rabies. This is a baby Brazilian free-tail bat also called Mexican free-tail bat by some. The baby most likely got it from his mother. When I was at Bat World Sanctuary in June of 2010 we would find a few dead bats per day with their feet curled up to their stomach. This is a sign they died of rabies. We would find some like this bat, alive but showing signs of rabies. Amanda Lollar then euthanized this bat with isoflurane. Using isoflurane in this manner causes the bat to suffocate to death.

In 1999 a toddler was bitten on the cheek by a rabid baby bat from Bat World Sanctuary. Here is that newspaper article.

Palo Pinto County issued a rabies alert about this incident. Everyone was instructed to exclude bats from their properties. Amanda Lollar and Bat World Sanctuary did not comply. They intentionally left a building open to the elements to attract bats to her building. This is a building and safety besides health department code violations.

In 1996 74% of the dead and dying bats found at Bat World Sanctuary tested positive for rabies. This is an extremely high percentage of bats to be rabid. Most believe it's because Amanda Lollar of Bat World Sanctuary left her building open to the elements. She also actively aided the bats giving food, water and health care. What is odd is that Amanda Lollar of Bat World Sanctuary vaccinates all bats for rabies upon intake. Then she releases the survivors back to her building. You would think their rabies rate would be lower. It almost seems to have had the opposite effect.

Again, NEVER TOUCH A BAT WITH YOUR BARE HAND. Not all bats carry rabies but rabies is fatal.
